UN document is a missed opportunity

The United Nations World summit, which begins today may be set to end in disagreement as rows continue over a number of key issues, including the definition of terrorism, non-proliferation, and reform of the UN. The United Nations final draft document has little progress on plans for UN reform or on aid. There is no new money for aid or debt relief, and the language on fair trade has been weakened. Nor has there been movement on climate change, arms proliferation or expansion of the Security Council.

Liberal Democrats Press for Action

The Conservative administration at County Hall has announced that they will be hiring Consultants to carry out a financial review - less than one year after the Council completed the last review. The Liberal Democrat councillors on Surrey County Council are pressing the Conservative Administration to make savings in administrative costs, to make the County Council more efficient and to cut wasted spending.

Refunds for Delayed Rail Passengers

Rail passengers can look forward to compensation if their trains are delayed, following a vote by the European Parliament's Transport Committee on 19 April. MEPs are also insisting that compensation - whether cash refunds or vouchers - should be given not just to international rail passengers but also to passengers on domestic journeys, including commuters. And they want cash refunds to be based on a simple, easy-to-understand scale.
