Rochdale's MP Paul Rowen officially opened the newly upgraded facilities at Birch Hill Hospital, which he described as "a first rate service for our borough." Birch Hill Hospital provides inpatient mental health services for adults and older people and outpatient services for service users of all ages, which has had a £7million upgrade over the last 18 months.

Britain's leading environmental groups have today pulled out of the consultation on whether the government should build a new generation of nuclear power stations. The coalition, which includes Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and Green Alliance, claim the government is distorting the evidence and say they are considering whether to take the case to court again. The group accused the government of "conducting a public relations stitch-up designed to deliver a preordained policy on new nuclear power" and "rushing" a consultation process that its advisers say should take at least nine months.

More than two billion litres of bottled water fly off shop shelves every year and sales are growing at nearly 9 per cent a year. But in July the Drinking Water Inspectorate's report on water in the Midlands said that 99.8% of tap water samples passed their tests. Other tests reveal that there is no known health advantage to be gained from drinking bottled water instead of tap water.
