FARRON CHAIRS FARMERS FRINGE MEETING

Local MP Tim Farron has called for a regionalised relaxation to the Foot and Mouth movement ban while chairing a fringe meeting at the Liberal Democrat party conference in Brighton. Tim was joined at the meeting by Peter Kendall (President, NFU), Dr Helen Phillips (CEO, Natural England) and Roger Williams MP (Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs Spokesman).

Liberal Democrats call for reform to the Tax system

Conference, also today debated the Tax Reform Policy Paper - Reducing the Burden. After ten years of the current Labour Government the tax system remains unfair, with the bottom 20% of households paying a higher proportion of their income in taxes than the top 20% of households. Wealth inequality is now worse than at any time under Margaret Thatcher.

Tesco Store

Consultation Announced on Cheriton Tesco Expansion Plan

Tesco has announced plans to extend it's store in Cheriton, Folkestone, and will will be launching an exhibition of the proposals in the store next month. The proposed expansion of the store would increase the current floor area from around 6,500 sq. metres with 401 car parking spaces to 10,200 sq. metres with 633 parking spaces.

Benefit system too complex says Paul Rowen

Paul Rowen MP, in Brighton for the Liberal Democrat Conference, has told a Fringe Meeting of the Public and Commercial Services Union that, "The Government has failed the most vulnerable people over the last decade." Mr Rowen was speaking at the meeting called: 'The future of welfare delivery.'

Every school should have a "bullying mentor"

The Lib Dems believe every school should have a 'Bullying Mentor', a trained member of staff to counsel children who are the victims of bullying. The proposal was part of a package of measures aimed at tackling bullying in schools, including homophobic bullying, proposed by Bristol West MP Stephen Williams and passed by the Liberal Democrat Autumn conference today.

Liberal Democrats condemn pro-nuclear decision in Suffolk

Liberal Democrats on Suffolk County Council condemned the decision of the ruling Conservative group to vote in favour of nuclear energy for Suffolk. The decision came after a wide ranging debate on the future of nuclear energy in the UK and in Suffolk in particular.
