New litter bins for the West Park

Claire Darke has welcomed the new litter bins recently installed round the West Park. Claire said, "Liberal Democrats have been asking for these bins for some time as part of our campaign to improve the area. It is of course necessary for these bins to be emptied frequently. All too often I notice bins that are over flowing."

MP officially opens upgraded facilities

Rochdale's MP Paul Rowen officially opened the newly upgraded facilities at Birch Hill Hospital, which he described as "a first rate service for our borough." Birch Hill Hospital provides inpatient mental health services for adults and older people and outpatient services for service users of all ages, which has had a £7million upgrade over the last 18 months.

Green groups withdraw from nuclear consultation 'stitch up'

Britain's leading environmental groups have today pulled out of the consultation on whether the government should build a new generation of nuclear power stations. The coalition, which includes Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and Green Alliance, claim the government is distorting the evidence and say they are considering whether to take the case to court again. The group accused the government of "conducting a public relations stitch-up designed to deliver a preordained policy on new nuclear power" and "rushing" a consultation process that its advisers say should take at least nine months.

Bottled water insanity

Councillor Robin Lawrence and Claire Darke have attacked Britain's £2 billion thirst for bottled water as environmental insanity. More than two billion litres of bottled water fly off shop shelves every year and sales are growing at nearly 9 per cent a year. But in July the Drinking Water Inspectorate's report on water in the Midlands said that 99.8% of tap water samples passed their tests. Other tests reveal that there is no known health advantage to be gained from drinking bottled water instead of tap water.
