Syphilis still spreading

Today's news from the Health Protection Agency that the number of syphilis infections is still increasing is a wake-up call to the government over the poor funding of sexual health services, says DELGA chair Jen Yockney. The number of infections nationwide has spiralled from 333 in 2000 to 2,807 in 2005.

Scientists have discovered how heart disease or a stroke may trigger Alzheimer's disease. Both conditions lead to a reduction of oxygen flow to the brain.

Call for improved dementia care

Care for people with dementia in England and Wales must be more co-ordinated, with better access to specialist services, a watchdog says. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence also called for carers to be given access to counselling as part of its guidance.

Carbon emissions in Chelmsford unsustainable

Chelmsford is emitting three times as much carbon dioxide as the global average, and thus making a major contribution to climate change. This was revealed in dramatic new Government figures, calculated locally by Liberal Democrat Stephen Robinson. There was a small consolation in that this figure is better than the national average.

A campaign is being launched by Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Forums across England to encourage more members of the public to volunteer and help improve health services in their area. The Forums are made up of volunteers from all backgrounds of the local community who represent patients and the public in decisions about health and health services.
