Alexander welcomes Lords support for Independent Living

Danny Alexander MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Social Exclusion and Disability Spokesperson, today welcomed the completion of the Lords Stages of the Disabled Persons (Independent Living) Bill. Introduced by Lord Ashley of Stoke, the Private Member's Bill is aimed at tackling the growing gap in social care, and ensuring greater choice and support for disabled people and their carers.

Liberal Democrat dossier shows need for anti-terror leaks to end

The Liberal Democrats today called for an investigation into leaks that potentially endanger anti-terror investigations. The party has produced a dossier of examples of unofficial briefings from Whitehall and Westminster related to anti-terror cases, which were premature or inaccurate and potentially compromised investigations. This comes after Peter Clarke, Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said that the people responsible for such leaks should be 'thoroughly ashamed' and that leaks 'put lives at risk'. David Cameron also demanded an inquiry into the incident during PMQs in the Commons today.

A report in The Independent this week showed Labour at a record low in the polls. Just over a week before the local elections and the party has slid to 27 points in the polls, just 5 points ahead of the Liberal Democrats who have been making steady increases in recent months.

OFT to look at £30,000 bill for ear implant

The parents of a six-year-old girl who was born profoundly deaf are complaining to the Office of Fair Trading after the NHS refused to provide her with a second "bionic ear" implant, leaving them with a £30,000 bill for the operation.
