POST OFFICE CLOSURES TO HIT LOCAL VILLAGES
Trade Secretary Alistair Darling has confirmed that about 2,500 post offices - a fifth of those left in the UK - are to close by 2009. Mr Darling said the current loss-making network was "unsustainable" and pointed out four million fewer customers were using post offices every week than two years ago and it was losing £4m a week. The Lib Dems have called for an additional £2bn investment in the Post Office that would create a thriving network.
