ID Card cost already £32million

Liberal Democrat Question have revealed that the Government has already spent £32m preparing for its ID card scheme even before it becomes law. Spending rose from £25,000 to £63,000 a day in the last six months of 2005, the Home Office said.

Leicester City Council

Leicester Council is First Class

The National Audit Commission has awarded Leicester Council full marks after a recent assessment. The four-star status means that Leicester Council is one of the best in the country and is a great improvement on last years grading, when the city was only awarded three stars. The Commission also judged that the Council was improving the services it provides for the local community and as a result will improve further.

New Library Opened

The first new library for 20 years was opened in the Hamilton area at the end of last year. The library has been very popular with local residents, with 1200 visitors in the first week of opening alone. Such popularity is down to the wide range of services the library offers - including free internet access, DVD rental in addition to 10,000 books.

Public more environmentally progressive than the Government - Baker

A Guardian/ICM poll has revealed that 63% of the population approve of new green taxes to discourage environmentally damaging behaviour. Commenting on the Poll, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Norman Baker MP, said "I am delighted to see that so many people are aware that we need more green taxation in order to protect our environment for the future. It is a pity that the government is not as progressive in its thinking as the public."
