'Changes needed' in social care

An overhaul in social care with more state-funded support for the most vulnerable is needed, a survey says. Social care is effectively means-tested in the UK apart from Scotland where personal care is provided free. But a poll of 2,306 found most people were against the current arrangements, although many accepted some individual contribution may be needed.

Long wait for coeliac diagnosis

People with coeliac disease are waiting an average of 13 years to be diagnosed, a poll has revealed. The gut disorder is caused by gluten intolerance, and can lead to bone problems, infertility or bowel cancer. The charity Coeliac UK says some of the 800 patients surveyed reported seeing their GP almost 30 times before being diagnosed. But it says the condition can be easily detected by GPs using a quick and simple blood test.

Despite feeling flushed with success, Cllr Robin Lawrence and the Liberal Democrats realise that there is much to do in Park Ward. A bathroom suite was found illegally fly tipped just days after the successful election victory. Cllr Lawrence has already arranged to get it removed.

Park Ward Thank You Focus

Thank You Focus for Park Ward

After their historic victory in winning Park Ward, A "Thank You" Focus is now being delivered to all homes in the Ward. Newly elected Councillor Robin Lawrence said "I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported me in our campaign. I intend to use my term in office to carry on the good work for our area. At the earliest opportunity I will keep my promise and place a motion before the City Council that would save Compton Park Centre from closure. The Liberal Democrats will continue to work for everyone in our area and not just for those people who voted Liberal Democrat." A PDF version of this Focus can be found in the Park 2007 section of the Download area of this site.

Parking Charges

I noted with interest the comments of Sandra Pell (BFP 4th May) regarding parking charges. While she is right to say that there is no such thing as free parking she has missed a fundamental point in the current car parks were constructed and paid for with taxpayers money. Many of the taxpayers who paid for that construction are now retired and on limited incomes. To dramatically increase charges in St Edmundsbury for car parking is very much a case of the Council reaping revenue in a double whammy from taxpayers. I am sure the council will point out the need for maintenance, but our car parks are automated. It is not the case that increased revenue is needed to cover increased costs. Charges are rising far too fast for that to be a viable answer and the excess revenue from car parking is published for all to see who care to look.
