Stockton Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Maureen Rigg, has welcomed the introduction of a bill to cut down on excessive packaging. Jo Swinson, MP, introduced her bill yesterday into Parliament calling for the establishment of a national body to promote and enforce packaging reduction; to make provision for the disposal of packaging by certain retailers and to establish binding targets for the reduction of packaging. Stockton Liberal Democrats had already supported a motion at their party conference in September on the same matter.

Brown should not be scared of the ballot box on the EU

Gordon Brown should show he is not afraid of the ballot box by holding a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU, Liberal Democrat acting leader, Vince Cable MP said yesterday. Speaking as the Prime Minister reported back to MPs after the Lisbon summit, Dr Cable said such a referendum would lead to an honest debate on the issue. The Liberal Democrats believe the current reform treaty does not require a referendum, but that the cumulative effect of changes to the EU since 1975 - including the Single European Act and Maastricht - mean there should now be a vote to reaffirm British membership.

MP secures promise from Minister on mental health ward

Local MP, Tim Farron has received assurances from the Health Minister Ivan Lewis that the mental health ward at Westmorland General Hospital, Ward 4, could not be permanently closed or downgraded without full public consultation. In response to a parliamentary question tabled by Mr Farron, the Minister said that the Trust had a 'responsibility' to consult fully.

Local MP presses County Council on Crooklands Bridge

Tim Farron has written to Cumbria County Council in an effort to force them to press forward with measures that will prevent the Crooklands Bridge from being damaged in the future. The bridge, which has been seriously damaged three times in recent months, is part of a well-used route between A65 and the Kent Estuary is crucial to the local area.
