Home Office's cover-up on immigration figures continues

Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, is appearing before MPs this afternoon, over claims she tried to conceal the fact that 5,000 illegal immigrants wrongly cleared to work in security posts. Leaked emails showed that Ms Smith was told about the latest immigration fiasco as long ago as July. Instead of informing MPs or the public about the potential security risk caused by her department, she chose to keep the situation quiet, apparently planning to admit the embarrassing events only after an internal inquiry.

Cameron's Council Tax plans are half baked says Huhne

Commenting on David Cameron's proposal that any council wanting to raise council tax above a level determined by ministers in London should call a local referendum before they do so, Liberal Democrat leadership contender Chris Huhne said, "Half-baked half-measures fail either to make council tax fairer, or give power to local communities. We need to axe the council tax entirely, and replace it with a local income tax based on ability to pay. And we need fair votes for councils so that local people can boot out bad councils more easily.

MP issues ultimatum to Mental Health Trust to re-open ward 4

Local MP, Tim Farron has written to Stephen Dalton, the Chief Executive of the Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust to demand that he provides a firm date on which Ward 4, which was temporarily closed earlier this year, will be reopened. Mr Farron has spoken to and received a number of letters from concerned constituents who have suffered since the closure of ward 4. Since the closure of Ward 4, some patients have been inappropriately sent home and others have been sent for treatment in Barrow, which leaves them very isolated from their friends and family.
