At Mid Sussex District Councils June meeting the Conservative Administration, supported by the councils 2 Labour members, rejected a Liberal Democrat proposal, which if it had been adopted, would have meant the community of Mid Sussex had a basic set of rules to judge consultations, the council carries out from time to time.
A motion presented to the recent meeting of Mid Sussex District Council by the Liberal Democrat Group got the thumbs up from the whole council after some initial reluctance by the controlling Conservative Cabinet. Cllr Graham Knight explained to the council, 'I can't argue with what is being said by cabinet members on the initiatives this council is carrying out to assist the people of Mid Sussex to develop a Sustainable community'. Much of the work being undertaken is good and solid Liberal Democrat policy. Graham went on to say 'the purpose of this motion is to lobby the Government to find parliamentary time for the Sustainable Communities Bill to be brought back to the House of Commons for adoption. We continually harp on about lack of money for infrastructure to go with the development we are being forced to take by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. This bill sets out that central government has to provide those resources. Failure to support this motion and the Bill is letting the Government of the
Gordon Brown has given his support for maintaining Britain as a nuclear power, angering some on the Labour left. Liberal Democrat defence spokesman Nick Harvey said "We are rushing headlong into a decision on nuclear weapons which should be considered over a much longer timescale."
